"So they would prefer to decide their fate by majority opinion rather than being ruled by me, whose right to kingship was passed down from ancestors said to be a god and a mermaid. Fools."
—King Richard
"Aw, Hell, the King" is the third episode of Season 2. It aired on January 10, 2016.[2]

Synopsis

Desperate to raise an army and storm Hortensia, Galavant and King Richard return to his former castle to find the village thriving now that they’ve found democracy. The discovery leads Richard to have an identity crisis now that his people don’t need him. Galavant uses a town hall meeting to recruit fighters from the village, but the volunteers are in short supply. In Hortensia, an evil wedding planner named Wormwood poisons Isabella’s mind with an enchanted tiara, intent on making her help him take over the kingdom. Meanwhile, Madalena threatens Sid with death unless he helps Gareth overcome his guilt-ridden nightmares about betraying Richard.[3]

Trivia

  • The original demo for the politically incorrect song Build a New Tomorrow pushed the boundaries so far that ABC demanded changes.[4] The demo was played for the audience who attended the Galavant panel at SF Sketchfest 2016.[5]
  • Several outtakes from this episode surfaced on The View two days before it debuted, featuring Joshua Sasse breaking character and crooning the 1978 Gloria Gaynor hit "I Will Survive."[6]
  • Karen David improvised Isabella's cheesy dance moves after her character fell under Chester Wormwood's spell in "The Happiest Day of Your Life."[7] The entire dance sequence was so grueling that the actors could barely move the next day.[7]
  • Muzz Khan's first day on the set was September 15, 2015.[8]
