- According to Glenn Slater, he and Alan Menken originally wrote less politically correct lyrics for this song, but they were rejected by the ABC network censors. [1]
- According to one of the showrunners, Kat Likkel, there was a production panic while filming this sequence. The crew were short one singer, and they didn't realize until it was too late.[2] To solve this problem, they had the baker appear twice during the scene where the peasants list all the types of people who don't count in their democracy.[3][4][5][6] He sings "and the lepers" at the beginning of this scene, and then ran to the end of the line to sing "and the hippies".
